Tennessee Cancer Coalition Membership

Standing Committees

Advocacy: Develop and promote an advocacy agenda that educates consumers and professionals about the cancer burden in Tennessee; advocates for necessary changes that reduce cancer burden; and keeps Executive Committee and Membership up-to-date on legislative and public policy matters.

Annual Summit: Plan, promote, and present the Tennessee Cancer Summit in coordination with the Marketing Committee, as directed by the Executive Committee.

Membership: develop the membership of the Coalition by working with the leadership of the regional coalitions to recruit new members; analyze and evaluate areas for special recruitment; and develop, update and provide new members an orientation and packet.

Marketing: Promotion of the Coalition and its activities; review and update TC2 website; and review annual reports and other publications about the Coalition and State Plan prior to finalization.

Surveillance: Assess, monitor and collect data on cancer rates and screening behaviors; evaluate Coalition activities; and review Interim and Annual reports to the CDC.

Disparities: Monitor and assist in the provision of access to cancer education, prevention, detection, and treatment for disparate populations; assist in outreach services; and recruit members representing disparate populations to participate in TC2.

Health Literacy: assist with the development and delivery of public health information on cancer topics in coordination with the Marketing Committee.

Internship Committee: disseminates information on internship opportunities with coalition members and academic institutions statewide for fall, spring, and summer internship opportunities. Through a peer review process, student applications are reviewed and matched with student intern project requests.

Resource Committees

The Resource Committees will provide statewide focus to the cancer issues and assist in developing a regional emphasis on these issues. The Resource Committees are:

Childhood Cancers, Clinical Trials/Genetics, Colorectal, Hematological, Lifestyle/Environment, Lung, Palliative Care, Men’s Cancers, Skin/Melanoma, Survivorship, Tobacco and Women’s Cancers

Roles and Responsibilities of Committee Members and Chairs

Resource and Standing Committee Members:

  1.  Attend at least 75% of meetings.  If unable to meet the commitment, notify committee chair and assist in finding replacement.
  2. Actively participate in the work of the committee.
  3.  Regional representatives bring the regions concerns to the committee and communicate information to the region from the committee. 

Resource Committee Chair*:

  1. Convene the committee by conference call at least quarterly and more often if needed.
  2. Recruit members who are expert and/or interested in the cancer issue of the committee.
  3. Appoint a member from each region who will bring the regions concerns to the committee and communicate information to the region from the committee.
  4. Review the State of TN Cancer Plan twice yearly to monitor progress towards meeting goals.
  5. Report to the Program Manager as requested the progress of meeting the plan goals and the membership of the committee.
  6. Consult with regions as requested to provide expertise regarding the focus of the committee.
  7. Coordinate and implement any statewide initiatives related to the committee.

Our membership is comprised of:

Coalition Members: Membership of the Coalition shall include any interested person including representatives of public and private agencies and organizations as well as individual cancer stakeholders, advocates and non-profit organizations engaged in the diagnosis, treatment, management, support, and rehabilitation of persons with cancer, in cancer research, in public health cancer prevention and screening programs, and persons with cancer and/or their families.

Executive Committee (EC): The duty of the Executive Committee shall be to monitor Coalition development and take necessary action.  The EC works in tandem with the State Program staff on all matters relating directly to the Coalition including consultation on the application for funding and interim and annual reports and work plans on comprehensive cancer control.

Regional State Chairs: Each Regional Coalition shall elect a representative by simple majority vote to provide leadership to the Regional Coalition for a two year term.

Standing** Committee State Chairs: Chairpersons shall serve a minimum of two (2) years with the option of serving for two additional years upon approval of the Executive committee.  Standing Committees convene by conference call at least quarterly, or as needed.  

Resource* Committee: The Resource Committees of the Coalition shall function to provide statewide focus to the cancer issues and assist in developing a regional emphasis on these issues.  Resource Committees convene by conference call at least quarterly, or as needed.  

Regional Coordinators: Contract employees with Middle Tennessee State University committed to fulfill the mission statement of TC2 and to support their local coalition members to fulfill the same.

Tennessee Department of Health Staff: The role of TN Department of Health- TN Comprehensive Cancer Control Program (TCCCP) staff is to partner with TC2 to successfully implement the State plan and to collaborate with the TC2 by providing infrastructure support and encouragement in support of successful TC2 communication, operations and development.
